Women’s Tennis Cruises to Fifth Straight PSAC Championship Match with Shutout of West Chester

BLOOOMSBURG, Pa. – The IUP women's tennis team will play in its fifth straight conference title after defeating West Chester 5-0 in the semifinals of the 2015 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships on Friday.

The Crimson Hawks will face rival California (Pa.) in Saturday's championship match, as they will look to unseat the eight-time defending PSAC champion Vulcans.

IUP easily swept doubles play, with Luise Von Agris (Castrop-Rauxel Germany/Adalbet-Stifter-Gymnasium) and Rachel Wood (Nottingham, U.K./West Bridgrord) starting things off with an 8-2 victory at two. Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) and Jarka Petercakova (Bratislava, Slovakia/Sport Gymnasium) followed by defeating Claire Uhle and Madelyn Shaak 8-1 at the top spot. The victory broke a 17-match win streak for the Golden Rams' Uhl and Shaak, which lasted the entire spring season.

Sophie Butland (Taunton, Somerset U.K./Bishop Fox's Community School) and Alanna McFail (Fort Washington, Md. /St. John's College ) put IUP on top 3-0 with an 8-5 victory at the third spot.

In singles play, it was Von Agris who again picked up the Crimson Hawks' first win with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at the No. 5 spot. Wood then clinched the match with an easy 6-1, 6-0 win at six.

The Crimson Hawks have dominated each of their five straight PSAC championship semifinal victories, dropping just one game and tallying four straight 5-0 wins.

This will be the fifth consecutive year these two teams have met for the conference title. The Crimson Hawks were just one game shy of upsetting Cal in the regular season meeting, losing on the road by a score of 5-4.

A win for IUP on Saturday would be its first ever PSAC women's tennis championship and would hand Cal its first loss to a conference opponent since the 2006 league title match.
