INDIANA, Pa. – Seniors
Ryan Uhl (St. Marys, Pa./St. Marys) and
Lindsay Stamp (Erie, Pa. /Mercyhurst Prep) have been named the 2014-15 IUP Men's and Women's Athletes of the Year, announced on Thursday afternoon.
Uhl put together the finest single season in IUP baseball program history, setting four school season records while leading Division II in four categories - 29 home runs, 0.66 home runs per game, 1.68 runs batted in per game, and a 1.085 slugging percentage.
The first baseman was named one of eight finalists for the Tino Martinez Award - the Division II Player of the Year - and earned first-or-second team All-American honors by three different outlets. Uhl was a unanimous first team All-Atlantic Region selection, a first team All-PSAC West pick, was named the NCBWA Division II National Hitter of the Week twice, and was an IUP Athlete of the Week for four consecutive weeks.
He broke IUP's career home run record of 24 and extended his career total to 42 by the end of the season, which was third most among active NCAA Division II players.
Stamp ended one of the finest seasons in program history as the very first IUP women's basketball player to earn first team All-American honors by Daktronics. The Atlantic Region and PSAC West Player of the Year, Stamp led the PSAC with 19.6 points per game and was IUP's leader with 8.3 rebounds per contest.
One of the most dominant scorers in the nation, Stamp scored in double-figures 27 times in 29 games, netting 20-or-more points on 15 occasions, including a season-high 32 against Pitt-Johnstown. She had 10 double-doubles on the year, including two in back-to-back games in the PSAC tournament. The guard hit the 1,000-point milestone on Nov. 18 against Ohio Valley and finished with 567 points on the season, just the third player in school history to break the 500-point plateau, falling just 45 points shy of the program's single season record.
The five-time PSAC West Athlete of the Week helped IUP to one of the best seasons in program history with a 25-4 overall record and a berth in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Championships.
The two were among eight total finalists – four men and four women – who were announced on Wednesday, May 27. The other finalists included men's basketball senior Devante Chance; football junior Kevin Clarke; men's golf junior Kenneth Sames; women's soccer senior Brittney Kuhns; women's tennis senior Tanya Timko; and women's lacrosse junior Amy Weinberg.
