INDIANA, Pa. – Trailing 5-0 midway through the first half, IUP rallied with eight straight goals and outscored Millersville by two in the second half as the Crimson Hawks won a 14-10 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Women's Lacrosse quarterfinal matchup on Saturday afternoon at Miller Stadium.
The win sends the Crimson Hawks (13-5, 10-2 PSAC) to the conference semifinals, where they will play number two seed West Chester (16-1, 11-1 PSAC) in Erie at final four host Mercyhurst on Friday, May 6.
This is the first conference semifinals trip for IUP since 2014, and third in the last four seasons. The Crimson Hawks will be looking for their first berth in the PSAC championship in program history.
Millersville (11-7) looked dominant early, owning time of possession while five different Marauders netted goals. IUP turned the ball over three times in the first 13 minutes and couldn't convert any of its first four shots.
The Crimson Hawks stopped the bleeding with a goal from
Adriana Greco (Sound Beach, N.Y./Rocky Point) at the 15:34 mark, which started an 8-0 run over the next 7:21. Greco scored once more during the run, which also included goals from
Ally Burrows (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus),
Amy Weinberg (Clarksville, Md./Atholton),
Sara Harshman (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville),
Kim Hooven (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) and
Brittney Palardy (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall).
Greco and Palardy went back-to-back to start the second half, giving IUP a 10-6 lead, but Millersville came to life with three straight goals to cut its deficit to one with 13:26 remaining. The Crimson Hawks then shut the door, getting goals from Greco, Weinberg and Hooven over a 2:14 span, helping to clinch the victory.
Greco had a game-high four goals while Weinberg scored three and dished out three assists, while picking up four draw controls and causing three turnovers. Weinberg is now just one assist shy of tying her own single season school record of 67.
Maggie Malane (Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview Regional) helped lead the defensive charge with three caused turnovers, while
Brenna Gallagher (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley) picked up seven ground balls and had four draw controls. The Crimson Hawks forced Millersville into 22 turnovers on the afternoon and limited the Marauders to 20 shots.
Angela Lontoc (Columbus, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) went the distance in the net for IUP, saving 10 shots.
Friday's semifinal game does not have a start time yet. If IUP wins, the PSAC championship will be held on Sunday in Erie.
