IUP Women’s Tennis advances to PSAC Championship with shutout win over West Chester

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – For the seventh consecutive year IUP women's tennis will be playing for a conference title as the Crimson Hawks flew past West Chester 5-0 in the semifinal round of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships on Friday.
 
The conference championships are hosted by Bloomsburg University and are being played at the Burt Reese Tennis Center.

It's the third straight season IUP has defeated West Chester – the top seed from the PSAC East – with a 5-0 score in the semifinal round. The Crimson Hawks have given up just one point to opponents in this round over the last seven years, posting six consecutive shut outs.
 
The Crimson Hawks will play West top seed Mercyhurst in the 2017 PSAC Championship match on Saturday morning. Both teams will be looking for their first ever conference title.
 
Doubles play was finished 3-2-1, with Sophie Butland (Taunton, Somerset, U.K./Bishop Fox's Community School) and Katya Minchenkova (Mytishchi, Russia/Secondary School No.12) starting things off with an 8-1 win. Rachel Wood (Nottingham, U.K./West Bridgrord) and Raquel Gonzalez (San Sebastian, Spain/Colegio Sagrado Corazon) won 8-3, with 16th-ranked Jarka Petercakova (Bratislava, Slovakia/Sport Gymnasium) and Luise von Agris (Castrop-Rauxel, Germany/Adalbet-Stifter-Gymnasium) finishing up with an 8-4 victory.
 
Butland defeated Steph Cifarelli 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 singles, and Wood clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Sophie Rathmell at No. 5.
 
It was the sixth straight victory for the Crimson Hawks, who have dropped just one point since their last loss – a 6-3 decision at Mercyhurst back on April 5.
 
Up next
The 2017 PSAC Championship match between the Crimson Hawks and Mercyhurst is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Saturday morning. The top seed in the NCAA Atlantic Region rankings could be up for grabs, as Mercyhurst and IUP were ranked first and second, respectively, in the latest edition of the rankings.
