IUP Athletic Hall of Fame
John Guyton earned his place in the IUP basketball records books by virtue of his consistency more so than overwhelming statistics.
Guyton stands 15th on the all-time scoring list and is one of only 23 players in school history with over 1,000 points at 1,197. A four-year starter and two-time team captain, Guyton averaged 12.3 points per game, and his
best statistical years came as a sophomore and junior when he averaged just over 14 points per game.
As a sophomore. he and honorable mention All-America Randy Allen helped IUP to a 21 -8 record. The following year he posted 14.2 points and 7.4 rebounds per game and earned NAIA District 18 second team honors in leading IUP to a 17-6 mark.
As a team captain his senior year. he led the Indians into the second round of the NAlA playoffs as three IUP players earned AII-NAIA honors.
That year Guyton averaged 12.9 points per game and hit 62 percent of his field goals, the sixth highest mark in school history. Those stats earned him a spot on the NAIA District 18 second team and the PSAC West first team. The trio of Guyton and teammates Bill Moore and Gary Kotsch gave the Indians a formidable trio.
A 6-foot-7 forward from Lakeview High School, Guyton shot 55 percent from the field for his career and averaged 6.5 rebounds. In the IUP annals, he is ninth in career field goal percentage at 53.7 percent and eighth in rebounds with 630.
Only eight IUP players have made more than Guyton's 259 free throws and his 469 field goals rank l1th. He was a three-time PSAC West all-star and was twice named to the Pittsburgh Press all-district squad.
