Hopkins Breaks School Record, Long Takes Home Title on Saturday at PSAC Championships

MECHANICSBURG, PA – Brandon Hopkins (Marion, VA/Marion) broke the school record in the 400 yard IM and Steve Long (Greensburg/Hempfield) won the 100 yard butterfly title as IUP competed during the third day of the 2013 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Men's and Women's Swimming Championships at Cumberland Valley High School.

The record and conference title highlight the third day of the championship meet as the women's team sits in third place overall with 268 points while the men are in sixth with 253 points.

West Chester remains the overall leaders on both sides with 508 points for the women and 573 points for the men.

Hopkins swam the 400 IM in 4:05.39, more than two seconds better than the previous mark of 4:07.70 set in 1985. The third place finish was also an NCAA provisional qualifying time.

Long's time of 49.65 in the 100 fly was just 0.1 seconds better than the second place finish as he successfully defended his title in the event.

On the women's side, Allyson Mitidieri (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) finished second in the 400 IM with an NCAA provisional time of 4:28.39, just 1.28 seconds off the lead. The women's 800 yard free style relay team of Christina Janosky (Dover, Pa. /Dover ), Mitidieri, Gabby Guttman (Allentown/Salisbury) and Ally Long (Frederick, MD/Frederick) hit an NCAA provisional time with a 7:44.85.

The final day of the championships pick up again on Sunday with the morning session starting at 10:00 a.m. The finals on Sunday will start at 5:00 p.m.
